sticker shock

I’m pretty sure I did a good job today of cutting back on all but the most necessary provisions.

Fifty pounds of ice. Three bottles of lamp oil. Five bottles of fizzy water. A few onions. Two heads of cabbage. Two boxes of Kleenex. A quart of cream. That’s it. And it still cost me fifty bucks.

Gasoline was $4.11 a gallon.

The “extravagence” of a chicken sandwich, onion rings, and a couple glasses of club soda at the Starlight cost me sixteen bucks with tip.

A hundred-dollar-bill is the new twenty.
